Exploring Waterloo

barbican

Waterloo Station is a major railway and underground station in Central London, near the London Eye, the Tate Modern, South Bank and County Hall, it brings millions of commuters in and out of London every day. Popular and fashionable for the variety of cultural and recreational activities, it is surprisingly calm and serene once away from the station, with a decidedly neighbourhood feel.

The Waterloo area really describes 2 places - the immediate area around the station, overlooking the Thames, and the main riverside areas of Lambeth, facing Parliament and Westminster. Around Waterloo Station are theatres, including Old Vic and it is the gateway to the South Bank complex with its superb National Theatre. There are restaurants, cafes, walks and views, from the imposing Tate modern to the old world atmosphere of the Globe Theatre. Notable landmarks in this area are the Imperial War Museum, St. Thomas' Hospital, the London Eye and the County Hall Aquarium.

Lower Marsh is the area's shopping district and it's been designated a conservation area. The Lower Marsh predates all of the surrounding buildings and offers an excellent example of shopfronts from many eras. Courts and alleyways and sidestreets still have original cobbles.
Waterloo is full of nightlife, but nearby Lambeth has a little urban village feel with great local cafes and restaurants. Pretty local picnic spots are the War Museum Park, and the lovely Lambeth Palace Gardens. The network of streets away from the river is full of little squares and urban open space. Truly gorgeous Georgian houses can be seen around St George's Circus/Lambeth tube area.
