Exploring Tower bridge and Tower Hill |
| |
Tower Bridge and its environs offer much in the way of historical sight-seeing, magnificent city views and opportunities to live some authentic "London" moments! The bridge itself is a major tourist draw, with its elevated walkways offering up London's architecture, monuments, and neighbourhoods from a birds-eye view.
On the north shore of the river, right is the Tower of London. Rife with history, this old part of the city includes the Monument (to the Great Fire of London in 1666), St. Paul's Cathedral and St. Katherine's Docks (dedicated to food and wine), all within a short walking distance of the bridge.
On the south side you can rival the gruesome history of the Tower with visits to the London Dungeon and the Clink Prison Museum. There are also less grisly pursuits to be enjoyed - Vinopolis, for a taste-tour of wine regions, the beautiful Southwark Cathedral and Tate Modern.
There is plenty in the way of restaurants and bars on both sides of the Thames, with Dicken's Inn in St. Katherine's Docks hosting 25 food stalls each Friday, all serving up only ethically and locally sourced foods. Across the bridge, try the 7th level restaurant at the Tate Modern for views of St. Paul's and Gherkin, as well as delicious modern British cuisine.

Borough Market is set beneath the railway viaducts between the river Thames and Borough High Street in South East London. This gourmand's delight is London's oldest food market and boasts a mouth-watering range of fresh food stalls under its Dickensian wrought-iron roof.
It sprawls around an atmospheric series of mazy streets and walkways and as well as the labyrinthine central area there are two more self contained markets.
Italian cheeses, Morecambe Bay shrimps, Spanish foods and much more. Atmospheric, lively and mouth-watering this foodie's paradise is a definite must on a Saturday morning.
With a large part of Three Crown Square currently closed for the Thameslink development programme, many of the traders are now housed in the newly-covered Jubilee Market, while the Green Market hosts a wide variety of smaller stalls. Our searchable and printable map will help you find your way around.
The Market is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with Saturday being busiest after 11am. Thursday is usually a relaxed shopping day and demonstration chefs are on hand for ideas and tips in the Jubilee Market. |
