Exploring Shoreditch and Hoxton Square

barbican

This area in east London is well known for its creative energy. This is one of London's edgiest districts, with legions of art galleries, bars and clubs. In fact, in the early 1990's this was ground zero for the Young British Artists, and today many compare the White Gallery, with its glass roof and showcased artists, to the Tate. This thriving art scene on the city fringe creates a neighbourhood in the forefront of club culture, music, art and fashion. You can find hidden galleries, Victorian warehouses, and chic hotels all within a stone's throw of London's business district. This fashionable part of town has easy transport links and 24 hr. bus links, in acknowledgement of its late-night buzz.

Crowded day and night, you can still meander down leafy, hidden sidestreets, and you'll eventually come upon the popular and uber-cool Hoxton Square. From the intimate cobbled square of Hoxton Market, to the beautiful neoclassical St. Leonard's Church at the junction of Old Street. Shoreditch High Street and Kingsland Road, you'll find yourself in a young, edgy, funky and relaxed environment. The former Shoreditch town hall is a beautiful example of well preserved Victorian architecture, and the gardens at the Geffreye Museum are stunning! Essentially a furniture museum, it sits in a quiet enclave of 18thc almshouses. You can explore the famous and gaudy Brick Lane, and try one of its over 50 Bangladeshi and Indian restaurants, or bar hop around Old Street and Hoxton Square. Within a 5 or 10 minute walk from the east end of Old Street, from Hoxton Square to Shoreditch HighStreet and Liverpool Street you can find a huge array of places to go. Dragon Bar and Prague are known to be friendly, crowded bars, Strongroom has a live band and outdoor seating, and for a more posh experience you can try Hoxton Hotel, Hoxton Pony, or Beach Blanket Babylon. Here in the heart of Shoreditch are East London's coolest shops, trendiest bars and most popular restaurants. Here too are the Markets of Columbia Road, Spitalfields and Brick Lane. This is a vibrant area that has a sophisticated and informal ambiance.
