Exploring Spitalfields and Brick Lane

spitalfields

The historically low cost of housing in this vibrant East End neighbourhood, has long attracted many waves of immigrants. All of these cultures have flourished in co-existence, along with dyed-in-the-wool Cockneys who have lived here for generations. This colourful diversity can best be seen in the varied array of English pubs, bagel eateries and savoury curry houses lining the streets.  Brick Lane, famous for it's fiery and fragrant cuisine, can lift your imagination to far off places while the wafting smell of flavorful curries whets your appetite!

Most of the area's buildings date back to the mid 17th century, when construction began after the Great Fire of London.  The splendid Victorian market hall of Spitalfields is renowned for the weekly Thursday Antiques Market and the Friday Fashion and Art Market.  If shopping as treasure-hunting is your passion, don't pass up an opportunity to explore Petticoat Lane, with it's second-hand and vintage clothing shops. Brick Lane is actually famous for its grafitti, with artists like Bansky, D*Face and Ben Eine artfully defacing many a wall! Just taking a walk around these parts can be a true voyage of discovery!

ACTIVITIES:
_________________________________________

Spitalfields Market is an escape from the cloned high streets fashion wear. It invites you to discover 'hidden gems' from fashion, arts to interiors and property design.

Wander through areas steeped in history but recently immersed in creativity and cutting edge style. Spitalfields has secured a place at the forefront of interiors, fashion, the arts and food.

It has been the site of a busy market since 1638, when King Charles gave a licence for flesh, fowl and roots to be sold in what was then known as Spittle Fields. Three hundred and sixty odd years later and now located within the historical Horner Buildings, the market continues to be the setting for a thriving narrative.
